The Monsoons Arrive...
A mild fragrance of the first raindrops of the season, falling on the thirsty landmass quenching the thirst of the then dusty land, passes up the nostrils to let you inform the arrival of monsoons.
Soon will unfold the sequential drama on the wet stage lit by the lightenings from the heavens, the drums will then follow to wake up the still asleep life………
As the drops fall and begin to soak the red mud a few of them also begin their long journey to the eternal oceans in the form of streams, several of them joining to form the mighty rivers pouring waters into the sea….. At the same time, while some of them also beginning their journey beneath the soil, little later emerging as springs……
The wait has ended after about seven months. The shoot of the tender grass will now emerge from the seed, after a long period of chilly mornings of the winter and the harsh fire of the summer. One by one the actors will play their role in the drama of life.
The green leaves of the “khair” look fresh as the dust is washed away. The glistening jewels of the first raindrops are still lingering on the leaf tips. Lush green carpet will now begin to spread creating a lush habitat for thousands of insects and arthropods. Earthworms will also take advantage of the moisture and start their burrowing business leaving behind globules of fertile soil. The bird activity will boost up with the new fledgelings entering a world of wonders. They will have to pass the initial weeks with great caution in order to make a safe journey into the adulthood to continue the process of regeneration. The parents will always be around keeping a watch over the inexperienced young ones. The new actors will have to undergo training from their predecessors in order to play successfully. This is the time of rehearsal for the young actors for the greater play of life.
The same drama has been going on for centuries now with some new actors entering every time as some others vanish from the stage forever. It seems that many have been leaving the stage quickly and permanently after the arrival of a skilled play actor, a two legged creature called “human”.
The chorus of the frogs has been sung in the forests of the Western Ghats for thousands of years and will continue the same way, until it is destroyed for the meagre short sighted selfishness.
The winged termites will take to the air for the first time of the season, with an aim of setting up a new ‘academy’ of actors. Most of these will perish adding few more nutrients to the soil whereas some providing a meal to others. Only a meagre fraction will survive to give rise to the next generation.
The monsoon play will continue till the drops from the heavens don’t stop bombarding the land………
